Gillette Cemetery (Manatee County, Florida) 3/16/2013

Gillette Cemetery is on the West side of Ellenton-Gillette Road between Moccasin Wallow Rd. and Rocky Payne Rd. It is near the town of Ellenton, FL, but the address is Palmetto, FL in Manatee County. Cemetery is called the Gillette Cemetery (originally the Gillette Family Cemetery), but then became a community cemetery with earliest tombstone of 1869. There was once a Gillette community; none existent today. Finally, the cemetery was named the “Gillette Cemetery, Incorporated.” A trust fund was established for maintenance.

Devices Do Not a Ghost Hunter Make

If you’re like me and watch every ghost show on TV, you’ve seen the parade of paranormal investigators clambering out of black vans stuffed chock full with EMF Detectors, FLIR Cameras, and REM-Pods. They stride purposefully into each haunted location bristling with these high-tech gadgets and gizmos. But is all of this really necessary to hunt ghosts? I’m here to tell you, it’s not.

While I believe the paranormal research field needs investigators who are applying the scientific method to collect evidence that supports the existence of ghosts, we also need folks who are interested in the less tangible aspects of ghost hunting.

While immersed in the editing process for Haunted Texas Vacations: The Complete Ghostly Guide and contemplating whether or not to categorize the book as non-fiction (which we eventually did), my publisher asked, “How does any of this prove ghosts are real?” I answered honestly, “It doesn’t prove anything at all.”

Why Do Ghost Hunters Investigate in the Dark?

This week we’re tackling a big issue: Why do we investigate in the dark?

Many investigators will echo TAPS in the sense that they’ll say that if phenomena is happening during the day and not at night, they’ll investigate in the day. But why do we investigate in the dark? Why not the day? Many don’t have answers.

So I’m going to do quick points on both sides of the issue,  but it’s first important to differentiate between investigating in the dark and investigating at night. Think about that as we go.

Reasons to investigate in the dark number ONE: One of my first responses to this question was that if a spirit appears and is producing light, it’s easier to see in dim lighting the same way that a flashlight is easier to see in dimmer light.
